The Inside Story

Something about Derkh
The character of Derkh - a young, seriously wounded enemy soldier who
becomes Gabrielle’s patient - was never intended to be an ongoing character. In
The Bonemender, he was really just a plot device, a way to keep Gabrielle safe
and out of trouble while she was a prisoner of the Greffaires. But one thing led to
another with Derkh. He and Gabrielle became friends, and then he showed up at
the end of the book, and I let Gabrielle bring him home like a lost puppy.

Good thing I did, because that’s what led me to write
The Bonemender’s Oath. I’d
developed this strange, motherly fondness for Derkh, and I was worried about
him. I had to write a sequel to find out if he’d be OK!
My, what big feet you have!

Yes, the seskeesh in The Bonemender’s Oath are based
on the sasquatch, the legendary (or is it?) Bigfoot of the
Pacific mountains. What the heck, I thought it was about
time some North American creatures got included in a
fantasy story. Dragons, shmagons.

Excerpt from The Bonemender's Oath

NONE OF THEM NOTICED when Tarkhet fell back from the fray
and pulled his knife. To Gabrielle it seemed rather that the blade
burst from beneath her skin, some disastrous, inexplicable
rupture of her own body. She had fallen back against the
cliff-face before she knew what was wrong with her...
