The Inside Story

Wanted: Tarzine dancer
The idea for this story - that Gabrielle’s niece and nephew would be kidnapped by
Tarzine pirates - came to me quite easily, but I was stalled for a long time by really
basic plot problems. First and foremost: how do you mount a rescue attempt,
when your quarry has disappeared over an ocean and you have no idea where
they have gone?

A new character, the Tarzine dancer Yolenka, turned out to be the key to making
the story work. She stalked into my head one day when I was lying on the dock at
my cottage after a swim, half-asleep. She all but smacked me in the face and
shouted, “Hey! I am coming into your book, what are you going to do about it?” So
we had a little imaginary chat, and I sat up thinking, “Good. Derkh needs a
girlfriend.” And then I got to work.
Ship shape

See the little ship on the
cover of the book? That could
be a Krylian ship - but it's
definitely not the Tarzine ship
the kids were kidnapped in.

This photo of a model ship is
what I was looking at when I
wrote the story - isn't it
gorgeous?

Excerpt from The Bonemender's Choice

FÉOLAN WAS NEVER SURE what made him glance down the
beach. The air was full of shouting and screams, groans and
roared curses. Even his Elf-ears could not have picked out one
young voice. Yet something carried enough to prick at him --
perhaps just the hint of a sound in the wrong register for
fighting men. Perhaps a drifting wisp of the children’s fear.
